Overview

The Subclass 482 visa, also known as the Skills in Demand visa, is a temporary work visa that allows Australian employers to sponsor skilled overseas workers when they cannot find suitable local talent. It replaced the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa in December 2024.

  • Stay in Australia for up to 4 years (5 years for Hong Kong passport holders)

Streams

Core Skills Stream

Purpose: To fill general labour shortages across industries.

Eligibility:

  • Occupation must be on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL)

  • Minimum 1 year of full-time relevant work experience in the last 5 years

  • English requirement: IELTS 5.0 overall, with at least 5.0 in each band (or equivalent)

  • Salary threshold: Minimum AUD $73,150 or market salary rate

  • Skills assessment: May be required depending on occupation

  • Visa duration: Up to 4 years

Best for: Skilled workers in trades, healthcare, hospitality, construction, and other mainstream sectors.

Specialist Skills Stream

Purpose: To attract highly skilled professionals in high-demand or niche roles.

Eligibility:

  • Occupation must be listed under ANZSCO Major Groups 1, 2, 4, 5, or 6

  • Salary threshold: Minimum AUD $135,000

  • Minimum 1 year of full-time relevant work experience

  • English requirement: Same as Core Skills (IELTS 5.0 in each band or equivalent)

  • Visa duration: Up to 4 years

Best for: Experts in IT, engineering, finance, medical, and other high-income roles not covered by CSOL.

Labour Agreement Stream

Purpose: For workers nominated under a formal Labour Agreement between an employer and the Australian Government.

Eligibility:

  • Occupation and terms defined by the specific Labour Agreement

  • Requirements for English, salary, and experience vary by agreement

  • Visa duration: Up to 4 years (5 years for Hong Kong passport holders)

Best for: Workers in niche sectors like agriculture, aged care, manufacturing, or regional roles with tailored conditions.

General Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be nominated by an approved sponsor

  • Meet skills, experience, and licensing requirements for the role

  • Demonstrate English proficiency (unless exempt)

  • Pass health and character checks

  • Hold relevant qualifications or skills assessment (if required)

Strategic Insights

  • Pathway to PR: All streams may lead to Subclass 186 after 2 years of employment

  • Flexibility: You can change sponsors within 180 days without breaching visa conditions

  • Work experience: Casual and part-time work is counted toward the 12-month requirement
